PORTLAND (WGME) -- Did you know when a city bus is pulling out into traffic you have to get out of its way?

It's the right thing to do, and it's also the law.

The state passed the "Yield-to-Bus Law" in 2019, but bus drivers say most drivers ignore it.

They are creating a public service announcement to get the word out about the law.

In addition to the safety concerns, Portland METRO says drivers yielding to buses keeps those buses on schedule.

"The more efficient our transit system is, the more people will use it as an alternative to driving, and that's why this yield-to-bus law is helpful, because it will keep our buses on time," Denise Beck of Greater Portland METRO said.

So remember, if a bus is flashing its yield sign, let it in.

It's the law.
